4v4 Soccer League

Why your 5 to 8 year old boy or girl should play 4v4 soccer...

Does your child show interest in soccer? Maybe you feel they should try something new? Many young players, between the ages of 6 and 9 years old, should start by playing 4v4 soccer, on a small pitch with a Size 3 ball using small goals (without goalkeepers) and they should almost be refereeing the game themselves.

With the Wayne Soccer Club having established both travel and academy level programs for more than 25 years, we made a conscious effort to expand, and support other areas of youth soccer which we believe will add to the overall development of the younger players in our programs. 2 years after we launched our program, US soccer have now mandated this requirement for these ages.

Many young players participate in recreation leagues which are delivered and managed by parents and although parents are a key factor in youth soccer, having them coach is not always beneficial to maximizing player development. Our 4v4 programs go about incorporating parents into the developmental programs in an all new way to not only provide the best learning environment for our players, but to also work with and educate those mentor parents.

The Wayne Soccer Club, along with our team of coaches have designed a comprehensive 4v4 soccer program where we not only develop the player, we help to guide and support the parent mentors/volunteers. Outstanding idea and it works, from the Spring of 2014 and 36 children, to over 200 children participating today, we feel it's a great success especially after evaluation of the program where we found the improvement of our young players to be tremendous. Playing in this smaller environment, creates less complexity and keeps players more engaged. This allows a greater level of understanding and we are then able to introduce a number of good habits which will help players as they progress into our travel and academy level play with 7v7, 9v9 and 11v11.

In 4v4 the young player is getting maximum touches of the ball, which is the best way to develop their skills. They feel confident and successful as it is easier to score goals, pass to a teammates, and play the game. They are also learning the basic principles of the game including ball control, dribbling, passing, defending, and scoring.

This format of the game should be fun and pressure-free and should not be associated with winning a trophy. Kids want to win, and there is no harm in that, but winning is more than the final result. Every child on the pitch can win if they are rewarded for their effort rather than the final score and that is what will breed good, motivated players with a great work ethic, and ultimately a generation of young players who want to stay in the game.
